After leading one of San Francisco's first underground rock bands of the psychedelic era, the Charlatans, Dan Hicks formed his own group, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, whose lively fusion of folk, blues, jazz, and swing was ahead of its time in the late '60s and early '70s and earned him an enthusiastic cult following, if not mainstream success. A man who has always joyously created his own music in his own way, Hicks celebrated his 60th birthday in 2001 with a special concert at San Francisco's Warfield Theater, in which he was joined by the surviving members of the Charlatans, as well as a gaggle of former Hot Licks members and longtime musical friends alongside his current group. Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks preserves this concert for posterity and includes the songs "I Scare Myself," "Milk Shakin' Mama," "News From Up the Street," "Payday Blues," "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?" and many more.
